पीताम्बराभरणमाल्यविभूषिताङ्गीं देवीं नमामि धृतमुद्गरवैरिजिह्वाम् ॥ १॥
गदाभिघातेन च दक्षिणेन पीताम्बराढ्यां द्विभुजां नमामि ॥ २॥
ब्रह्मास्त्रं च प्रवक्ष्यामि खेद्य प्रत्यय कारणम् ।
देवी पीताम्बरा का नाम तीनों लोक में प्रसिद्ध है, पीताम्बरा शब्द भी दो शब्दों से बना है, पहला ‘पीत‘ तथा दूसरा ‘अम्बरा‘, जिसका अभिप्राय हैं पीले रंग का अम्बर धारण करने वाली। देवी को पीला रंग अत्यंत प्रिय है। देवी पीले रंग के वस्त्र इत्यादि धारण करती है, पीले फूलों की माला धारण करती है। पीले रंग से देवी का घनिष्ठ सम्बन्ध हैं। पञ्च तत्वों द्वारा संपूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड का निर्माण हुआ हैं, जिनमें से पृथ्वी तत्व का सम्बन्ध पीले रंग से हैं। बगलामुखी या पीताम्बरा देवी साक्षात ब्रह्म-अस्त्र विद्या हैं, जिसका तोड़ तीनों लोक में किसी के द्वारा संभव नहीं हैं। सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड की शक्ति का समावेश देवी बगलामुखी में हैं।
भारत के लगभग सभी तान्त्रिकों ने एक स्वर से यह स्वीकार किया है कि बगलामुखी यन्त्र के समान और कोई अन्य विधान नहीं है जो कि इतने वेग से और तुरन्त प्रभाव दिखा सके। एक तरफ़ जहां यह यन्त्र शीघ्र ही सफलतादायक है, वहीं दूसरी ओर विशेष अनुष्ठान व मन्त्र जप के द्वारा जो बगलामुखी यन्त्र सिद्ध किया जाता है, वह तुरन्त कार्य सिद्धि में सहायता प्रदान करता है। दुर्लभ मन्त्र महार्णव में इसके बारे में लिखा है —
वृत्त च षोडशदलं यंत्र च भूपुरात्मकम्।।
